Stranger foods than haggis

Had a friend round for tea last night, and as usual we started talking about food.  Or to be more precise strange Scottish regional  food.

- Haggis in a roll. Not just served for Burns supper. It's a long salami shaped haggis sausage, cut into slices.  Then fried or baked, before being served in a buttered bread roll.  There are 2 camps, those that top it with Tomato ketchup and those who use Brown sauce.  I was in the tomato ketchup camp.

- Pineapple supper.  I remember going to the fish and chip shops in Aberdeen and being able to get a pineapple fritter with a portion of chips.  Very dissapointed when we moved to Fife to find they don't do it here!!!

Supper - Refers to anything served with chips from a Fish and chip Shop

-   Mealie pudding or white pudding.  Basically an Oat based stuffing in a sausage casing.  Another Aberdeen shire speciality.  My mum raid the shops in December, so close and extended family have there mealie pudding for Christmas Dinner.  We always had it served with Chicken.  Mmmm

- Pie in a roll.  As the name suggests basically a mince or steak pie sandwiched in a bread roll.  Didn't see this one till we moved to Fife.  It still boggles my mind as bit....

Piece is the Scottish word for sandwich

- Sugar piece.  Spread a slice of bread with butter, sprinkle on sugar and top with another piece of bread.

- Syrup and sugar piece.  Another variation of the sugar piece.  Where the sugar is sprinkled over a slice of bread, spread with syrup.  Just in case it isn't sweet enough.

- Fly Cemetery pie or Fruit Slice.  Traditionally made with dried fruit, in a shortcrust pastry.   The story goes that the dried fruit resembles dead fly's.  A classic example of Scots Dark humour.

The fly cemetery pie is a retro blast from the past for me.  So I'm definitely putting it on my baking to do list xxx
