10 Ways to cook Green pea's - Dairy free


Green pea's are a wonderfully versatile vegetable.  You can do so much more with them, than just serving as a side dish to your main meal.




1.  Easy Pea Soup
600 g - Frozen Pea's
900 ml - Vegetable Stock
1 medium potato - diced
salt and pepper to taste

- Bring the stock to the boil and cook your potato for 5 mins, then add the pea's.  Simmer till the potato's are soft.

- Get a hand blender or food processor and blend the soup till smooth. 

- Finally add salt and pepper to taste.  You could also add a few more frozen pea's for texture.

The potato gives this soup it's smooth and creamy texture, with out adding any dairy products.


2. Green Pea Pesto

I love pesto, but it's so hard to find a dairy free version.  Sometimes your cheaper and quicker just making your own.  It will keep in the fridge for a week and can also be frozen, so nothing is wasted.

It's great mixed into pasta, but you can do so much more with it. Pesto is a great ingredient for using as a base sauce on a dairy free pizza.  I add it in along with tinned tomato's to make sauces and soups.  The pesto add that extra kick of flavour.   I also love it simply topped on to some Hummus.

I found a great recipe Green Pea pesto with pasta on Dawn Jackson Blatner's Internet site.  She's a food and nutrion expert, with recipes for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free food.


Sharabelles Simple Pesto for 1

125g Frozen Pea's
1 desset spoon vegetable oil
salt and pepper
Reserve a little cooking water from pea's

- Cook your frozen pea's as directed by packaging.  Drain and keep some of the water.

- Place cooked pea's into a food processor, add veg oil and a little salt and pepper.  Pulse till pureed.

- Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved cooking water, and puree till it reaches as constistency your happy with.  You might want to add more of the cooking water.

Cook a portion of your chosen pasta, drain and return to the pan.  Mix your pea pesto into the pasta, and stir in pan to heat through.  Then serve...


3. Pea and Potato Samosa

Can't keep repeating this, but Indian food as a wealth of Traditional vegetarian recipes.  Try Anjum Anand's Potato and pea samosas recipe.

 Pea's can also be found in Curry recipes, adding both taste and colour.  BBC Good Food has a vegetarian recipe for Pea and tomato Curry.  To make this dairy free, Swap the Paneer for firm Tofu.

4. Rice and Pea's

Rice is a Global food staple in many countries and there a lot of dairy free recipes out there.  Along with vegetarian recipes that are also easy to make vegan.

- Lemon rice with pea's 
- Venetian Rice and Pea's  By using dairy free ingrediants, vegetable stock and leaving out the parmesan, this recipe can easyily be made dairy free. 


- Caribbean peas rice  The pea's in this recipe refer's to pigeon pea's a variety of Bean.  I don't see why you could'nt add green pea's instead.

- Arroz Mexicano



5.  Braised Pea's
A classic French recipe courtsey of Jamie Oliver for Braised pea's with spring onion and lettuce.
Looks like a great light summer recipe. 

I also discovered a Portugese recipe dairy free Ervilhas guisadas portuguese braised peas with eggs and chourico.  Leave out the Chourico to make this one Vegetarian and Swap the egg's for Tofu to make it vegan.

Pea's from the freezer cabinet usually have more nutrition and a sweeter taste than fresh pea's.  Since they are Frozen as soon as they are pick.  Fresh pea's from the garden are great, but do you really have the time to get them of the pea pods. 



6. Roasted Green Pea's

When I research ways to cook vegetables I search for the basic cooking terms.  Never really expected to find a recipe for Roasted Green Pea's though.  Just proves my point -  if you can think it, some ones made it

7. Green Pea Vegetable Dip/Spread

Green Pea Dips, spread and hummus recipes are pretty much similar.  Find one you like, and call it what you like.  Who's to know, as long as it's tasty.

8. Mushy Green Pea's

I can't have a dairy free Green pea list with out mentioned that British Classic - Mushy pea's.  Love or hate them there iconic.  There usually made from dried marrow fat pea's, but Jamie Oliver has a minty mushy pea recipe using Frozen Green pea's.

9.  Pea ice cream and Sorbet

I remembered seeing this recipe on an episode of River Cottage for - Pea and mint Ice cream.  It's a full dairy recipe, that can be made dairy free by swapping out ingredients.  For a totally Vegan recipe here's a link for  a  Pea Sorbet recipe.

10. Green Pea Cupcake

I don't think Iv found a vegetable  yet that some one (usually American)  hasn't added to a cake.  The naturally green coloured cakes are perfect for St Patricks day next sunday.
