Porridge season time again....
Banana and raisin porridge
Scotland hasn't had the best weather this year, for every day of glorious sun we've had a of day torrential horizontal rain. The nights are starting to get colder, and the last thing I want in the morning is a cold breakfast. So its Porridge time again.
As a canny thrifty Scot I thought I'd pass on some of my budget cooking tips, for making a nice hot bowl of porridge. Forgot buying Flavoured individual pre packed porridge sachet, make your own and save some money.
Top tip 1: Buy a large bag of porridge and weight out a portion. Find a storage container or cup that the amount fits into. That way when you make your porridge in the morning you don't have to worry about using the scales because you can use the cup/container to measure a portion.
Top tip 2: Instead of using a jug to measure out your milk or water, use the same cup that you used for the porridge. I use 1 cup liquid to 1/2 cup porridge, which is a ration of 2 parts liquid to every 1 part porridge.
Top tip 3: It's easy to flavour your own porridge just by adding fruit, sugar and spices, so make your own.
Flavour idea's
Add the below to your porridge and liquid mix before you start cooking in either the microwave or on your cooker.
Banana & Raisin
1 chop banana, 1/2tsp mixed spice and a small portion of raisins. Add spoonful of natural yogurt once you have it in your breakfast bowl and swirl in to make it extra creamy.
Apple crumble
1 grated apple and 1/2 tsp Cinnamon. Sprinkle some muesli on top once you've dished it up and you'll feel like your having dessert for breakfast
Rhubarb Crumble
Once cooked and plated, add a scoop of stewed rhubarb, a little yogurt, the finally sprinkle with muesli.
Just Jam
Add a spoonful of your favourite jam on top of your bowl of porridge
Syrup
Drizzle your porridge with your favourite syrup to sweeten.
Top tip 4: Prepare your porridge the night before. The idea of cooking first thing in the morning puts many people off. Get your porridge and liquid measured out the night before and leave covered in your fridge. To save more time do this in the pot or container you plan to cook it in.
Porridge doesn't have to be boring and is a great slow energy realise breakfast on a cold morning xxxx
