Aroma coffee bar, Edinburgh - Review

- 75 South Bridge, Old Town, Edinburgh EH1 1HN

We had planned a trip to Edinburgh to visit the National Museum, I've not seen it since it re-opened and we decided to go mid week when it would be less busy. The majority of the museums and Art galleries in Scotland are free entry. So there perfect for visitors on a budget, or families looking to entertain kids over the holidays.

We decided to have lunch first, there is a cafe and bistro in the Museum but they are on open view to the public. So we had a look at the restaurants and cafes around the area instead and picked this one to try. When you have food intolerances it's a bit more difficult finding someplace to eat. Aroma Coffee bar's menu, had a lot of options that I could chose from. It also looked really comfortable inside.

The large windows let lots of light into the cafe, as soon as we entered we were welcomed in. I was surprised to find it was table service, definitely a step up from the chain cafes like Starbucks and Costa which too many people head too.

Aroma Coffee Bar is a lovely space to eat in, with large tables well spaced apart. The menu has a mix of cuisines, so there is something for everyone. There were plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available. They serve breakfast, lunch and coffee. Takeaway options are available, you could always eat alfresco on the steps of the National museum.  We do occasionally get hot enough weather in Scotland to eat outside.

The breakfasts options ranged from continental, filled breakfast rolls too a full cooked breakfast. The lunch items range from baked potatoes, wraps, panini's, burgers, salads and chips. They also serve cakes and pastries if you are just after coffee and cake.

I had the falafel and hummus wrap and my mum had a jacket potato with chicken salad. The falafels looked homemade and are some of the best Iv had. Too often there dry and crumbly. The wrap also had lettuce and tomato inside. I could have had spiced sauce with it, but my IBS can't handle that. My wrap had also been toasted in the panini press, which gave it a nice crunch.

All the food looked fresh made on site, I had previously worked in a cafe and where all the panini's and wraps came pre-packaged.   I really enjoyed my lunch and could have easily ordered another one. My mum's jacket potato was big and the chicken portion was generous. We both really enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back the next time we are in Edinburgh.

VERDICT
If you want to see the real Edinburgh avoid the big chains like Costa and Starbucks. This is the type of place that locals like to eat in, which tells you a lot about the food.  Aroma coffee bar serves fresh food cooked to order. The staff are friendly and really helpful. The table service is an extra bonus. The prices are more than reasonable, you wouldn't think you were in Edinburgh.  I have anxiety problems and feel claustrophobic in certain places, for me the cafe had a really comfortable informal atmosphere.  Which made my eating experience even more enjoyable.
