Asda Free From - Product review

Asda Supermarket
Dunfermline

Free From Products

I went shopping today at Asda and was pleasantly surprised to find they have increased their Free from range of products across the store.

They now have a variety of Free From products to rival Sainsbury's.  Supermarkets are still not as good as speciality food stores like Real Foods Edinburgh.  However the range they have, means I need to visit my favourite speciality stores less.  More importantly I can now shop locally.

Picked out a few of my favourite Free From foods and drinks.

Kallo Vegetable Stock Cubes

Kallo Vegetable Stock Cubes

I am yeast intolerant and find that most vegetarian stock cubes have nutritional yeast added for flavouring.  They also use it to flavour most vegan products, including cheese.

I either find the product is lactose free but has yeast added, or that it's yeast free but contains milk!!!!!

So it's good to find a reasonable priced Vegetable stock cube to cook with.

TOP TIP - crumble the stock cube into the pan with your softened vegetables and cook for a minute before adding water.  Really boosts the flavour.

Green Pesto - made with Basil.

Free from gluten, dairy, soy, nut and egg. Basil pesto

Pesto is a great store cupboard staple to have.  You can toss it with pasta for a quick meal.  Mix it with dairy free yogurt or mayonnaise to make a pesto dressing.  Or add to homemade tomato sauce to boost the flavour.

I  currently have a jar in my fridge.

Nairns Scottish Oatcakes

Suitable for Vegans & Sugar free

I love Oatcakes I have memories childhood memories of eating them with my granddad.  There a Scottish Staple, great served with soup, stovies or on their own as a snack. My mum recently had them served with hummus.  Nairn also do a Gluten free version.

Asda Chosen by You Free From Lactose Chocolate and Hazelnut Spread 400g

Asda Chosen by You Free From Lactose Chocolate and Hazelnut Spread 400g

- £1.80 pretty reasonable price

Finally a dairy free chocolate spread.  I got hooked on Nutella after a self catering holiday in Paris.  Pretty tasty, I could eat this straight from the jar.

It's free from lactose and is not made with dairy ingredients, however they don't recommend it for Milk allergy sufferers. I can only guess that they cannot guarantee that  the product itself or the ingredients use to make it are not made in a Total free from environment.

I'm lactose intolerant, so the chocolate spread is Ok for my IBS.

Alpro Almond Milk UHT

Alpro Almond Milk UHT

Asda has a pretty big stock of Dairy free Milk, and not just in their free from isle.  You can also find it in the fresh milk and UHT milk sections of the supermarket.

I normally use Soya milk, but Iv recently became hooked on Almond.  I prefer my non dairy milk unsweetened. However I know that a lot of people find it easier to switch over from dairy to non dairy if it's sweetened.

Fabulous Fudge Factory Dairy free Vanilla Fudge

Fabulous Fudge Factory Dairy free Vanilla Fudge

- I treated myself to some of this Dairy free Fudge for my birthday.  Fudge used to be one of my favourite indulgences, until I became Lactose intolerant.

It tastes good but is way to sweet for me,  I only ever ate 2 squares each time.  Which isn't really a bad thing, as it made the packet last longer.
