Gluten free Iced cranberry mince pies - Sainsbury's

Image
Sainsbury supermarket has one of the most comprehensive ranges of Free From foods.  There free from  Christmas  selection has also increased as well.  When I think of Christmas festive food, mince Pies immediately pop up in my mind.   Mince Pies are a main part of our British Christmas food traditions.  Thought the ones we eat today contain no minced meat. The originally ones were filled with a mix of minced meat, suet, dried fruit and spices, which usually included cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.  Only the rich could afford to buy spices, so were served to guests as a status symbol to show their wealth.   Modern mince pies thankfully no longer contain meat and the suet used is vegetarian not beef.  Households would have there own special recipe of mince meat, with their preferred blend of dried fruit and spices. They could soak the filling in brandy or rum. If you chose to make your own it has to be mixed clockwise as doi...

SAINSBURY'S - Free From Chocolate

Image
GLUTEN FREE, WHEAT FREE & DAIRY FREE I was in Sainsburys during the week and discovered they have a new range of Free From Chocolate bars.  I'm really impressed, the majority of supermarkets retailers have their own Free from small chocolate bars. However I've never seen a range as wide as Sainsbury's.   It's great to see a food retailer catering to  consumers who have food allergies or intolerances.  I then went to the cafe for a pot of tea.  I found a choice of 2 Free From options.  Mini Cherry Bakewells and a Chocolate Brownie, both Gluten and dairy free.  I passed these up and had a bread roll with strawberry jam.   It reminded me of the Jam pieces we used to eat for a snack when I was a kid.  Normally we got them as a snack, after we came back in from playing outside.  It was the perfect thing fill us up till tea time.  A jam piece is Scottish for a Jam sandwich.  100g bars of dairy free chocolat...

Moroccan style Falafel - Product review

Aldi Aldi is a great budget superstore, selling their own brands products for a very competitive price.  Unfortunately I can not use it for my main shop, since I have many food intolerance's.  They have on previous occasion celebrated gluten free month by stocking products, however in general they don't have much free from products in stock.  As a budget superstore, I can understand that these products are not their priority. So it was with pleasant surprise when I was browsing their aisles for my favourite hummus , I discovered they were now stocking Falafel. (Sorry but when your diets limited you do get excited by the smallest thing) Falafel are small balls which are made primarily from ground chickpeas, and flavoured with herbs and spices.  They are usually served in pitta bread or flat bread, with salad and various sauces.  You can also serve them as part of a mezze.   They have 2 kinds a Mediterranean and Moroccan style...

Morrisons free from range - Review

Image
I follow a  Low Fodmap diet  to manage my IBS.  It's not a diet for losing weight, it helps you avoid foods that can make your IBS symptoms worse.   I started it last July and have found it really helpful.  I already knew I was lactose intolerant, so following the diet wasn't that big a change.  Although giving up Gluten did pose a few problems for me, since I love to bake.   Gluten free baking is not easy and can be expensive so buying Free from products is more cost effective.  My local Morrisons has recently expanded its Free from range .  So I've had more products to chose from.  I've been like a kid in a candy store xxx Morrison's Free from Bakewell tarts Short crust pastry, jam, almond frangipane, icing and lets not forget the cherry on top.  I really enjoyed these, they are a bit sweet but ohh so tasty.  I have to limit how many I buy or I would have them everyday.  It's hard to find Gluten, wheat and...

Udis Cinnamon & Raisin Bagels - Review

Udis Cinnamon & Raisin Bagels - Review         Udis Gluten free Bagels   I got lucky last week and discovered that some Udis Bagels are also dairy free.  Cue excitement since Iv not had a bagel in over 5 years.  What can I say, its the little things that in life that get me excited.      First thing to remember is Gluten free processed bread is never going to taste as good as normal bread.  However it can come really close.      For me Gluten free bread tastes best when its toasted, so do these bagels.  The smell of the cinnamon as they toasted was gorgeous and tempting.  They looked great and tasted pretty good.  The texture when toasted is not that far off normal bagels.      One thing to mention is that they contain egg, so are not suitable for egg allergy sufferers or Vegans.  Would definitely buy this product again. I reall...

Asda Free From - Product review

Image
Asda Supermarket Dunfermline Free From Products I went shopping today at Asda and was pleasantly surprised to find they have increased their Free from  range of products across the store. They now have a variety of Free From products to rival Sainsbury's.  Supermarkets are still not as good as speciality food stores like Real Foods Edinburgh.  However the range they have, means I need to visit my favourite speciality stores less.  More importantly I can now shop locally.    Picked out a few of my favourite Free From foods and drinks. Kallo Vegetable Stock Cubes  I am yeast intolerant and find that most vegetarian stock cubes have nutritional yeast added for flavouring.  They also use it to flavour most vegan products, including cheese.   I either find the product is lactose free but has yeast added, or that it's yeast free but contains milk!!!!!   So it's good to find a reasonable priced Vegetable s...

Cookie Pizza pie

Cookie Pizza Pie with white chocolate chips and chopped cadbury fudge Taking a break from my blog for a little bit, while I'm away on holiday.  I'm planning to keep a note of  any food intolerance friendly places that I find on my travels.  Just been to Sainsbury's to stock up on Free From products for the flight.  Iv mentioned before that the Sainsbury's store Cafe in the Kirkcaldy store serves soya milk drinks.  Highlight of my day was finding they also have a Free from Christmas mince pie for sale at the checkout.  They have a special on, if you buy a hot drink you get the mince pie for half price.  It was good to see the offer was on both the normal and free from pie's.   Tasted great, has a lovely crisp pastry would definitely recommend.  Ignore there Free from Chocolate Brownie, I had that last time and it's really dry.  Free from doesn't have to mean Free from taste.  ...
