Debenhams Deli Dunfermline - Review

I've been really lucky finding 2  food intolerance friendly cafes within the same week.  Today it we visited the Debenhams Deli in Dunfermline.  Before embarked on some last minute back to school shopping for my niece and nephew.  

 The chill cabinet at the entrance to the cafe has bottled soft drinks & water, fruit juice and Innocent smoothies.  Along with sandwiches, wraps and Pannini's.

 The Cafe is Deli style making it easier to taylor options to suit your own particular allergy or intolerance.  Next to the Deli counter is a cake and bake display, that had my young nephews eyes almost popping out.  

 The kids had a Triple Chocolate muffin and a slice of chocolate fudge cake.  My mum wasn't hungry to settled for a kit kat with her de-caff latte.  

 For the Lactose Intolerance there was soya milk available, as well as several types of herbal tea. To eat there are a selection of Mrs Crimbles Gluten free Products, some of which are also dairy free.  I ordered my favourite the Coconut Macaroon.  
(Always double check the ingredients in case the products recipe has changed)  


Verdict: 

Nephew - Hot chocolate and Triple Chocolate muffin.  Muffin was a big hit, but his hot chocolate was too hot.  Id offered to get him cold milk, however being male he decided to tough it out.

Niece - Bottle of Pepsi and Chocolate fudge cake.  What she couldn't eat her brother happily finished.....

Mum - De-caff latte, lovely coffee not too bitter.  

Me  - Fruit frappe and Mrs Crimbles macaroon.  I love Mrs Crimbles macaroons, and the fruit frappe was lovely and refreshing.

It's great to find a place I can eat with friends and family, without them feeling bad because I don't have much choice.  

Next time I plan to check out what I can eat at the deli, would be a nice place to pop in for a light lunch.  

TIP: Do not be afraid to ask!!!  

A sign of a great Cafe's, restaurants and deli's is the customer service. Where they would rather have a happy repeat customer than no customers.

Scottish Tablet - Dairy free & Vegan

          Less well know than Haggis, tablet is another traditional Scottish food that's a whole lot sweeter.   Scottish Tablet - wiki    One of our regular customers at work dropped off some home made Tablet for us this week.  As always everyone but me could eat it, so I took a piece home for my mum instead.  It got me thinking that there must be some way to make it dairy free.   Shop bought packaged Scottish tablet is never as good as homemade.  As a child growing up in Scotland, I have fond memories of the sweet.  It was sold at cake and bake sales, and if you were really lucky the little corner shop would have a regular supplier.  It was always wrapped into portions with greaseproof paper, that way you knew it was authentic.        Scottish Tablet recipe     Traditional Scottish tablet is not exactly dairy free.  Usually I can use a free from substitute's, however the only recipe I knew was made with Condensed milk.  So Iv kind of giv

Curdled Rice pudding

What it should have looked like..... Due to a touch of nostalgia I decided to make some rice pudding today.  Also it mean't I'd have a pre-made breakfast for tomorrow morning and 15 mins more in bed.  Cold porridge just doesn't taste as good as cold creamy rice pudding. For me rice pudding has to be baked in the oven as that's the way my mum taught me to make it.  It was also one of the first recipes I was able to make dairy free.    Basic rice pudding constists of 3 simple ingredients  1 1/2 oz Rice 1 pint Milk  1tbsp Sugar Baked at 150 celsius for 1 1/2hrs - 2 hrs Something magical seems to happen to them, when cooked for a few hours in a low oven.  Only not this time because I decided to add some extra ingredients!!!
