Food for Thought - Review

Fly Cup

Morning and Afternoon Fly Cups were a big thing when I was a kid living in Aberdeen.

Fly Cup - Translation: Beverage served with a snack.  E.G A Fly Cup of Tea, or A cup of tea on they fly.

Each region of Scotland has it's own Dialect and slang, Fly cups was one of ours.  My Grandma served it the same time of day. In the morning you could get a biscuit with your drink, Afternoon was cake time.

Even now when my mum and I got out we always have to stop for  a drink, and a little something sweet  to eat.  Developing food intolerance's kind of took the fun out of it.  It was no long what are you going to have, but what can you eat!!!

Usually I end up in chain coffee shops like Starbucks and Costa Coffee, because I know they always have a non dairy drinking option.  Iv long giving up expecting to find something to eat as well.

So I was pretty excited when my mum discovered a Fair trade Cafe/Shop that stocked Free from Products in Burntisland.  Even better the cafe has soya milk available as dairy free option.

Food for Thought

Food for Thought a fair trade shop and cafe is a little hidden gem in the coastal town of Burntisland.  Selling real ice cream in cones for the pretty reasonable price of £1.70 for one scoop per cone.  No Mr Whippy soft serve ice cream served here.

Unfortunately I didn't notice if they had a dairy free option, but one young customer did get a Lemonade Ice pop.

The cafe is small with a little shop at the back, for the fair trade products.  My mum and I both avoid Caffeine so had De-caff lattes.  For the lucky folk that do not have food intolerance's, the cafe has homemade cakes available.

I felt just as lucky though when I discovered they Stocked Lazy Day Foods  Products.  There a Scottish Company specialising in Baked goods that are......

- Gluten Free
- Wheat Free
- Dairy free
- Egg free
- Non Hydrogenated
- Vegan

Belgian Dark Chocolate Dipped Ginger Snaps - 1

Mum chose a lovely slice of homemade Victoria Sandwich cake. Verdict: the cake was lovely but a bit dense.  It could have done with more butter cream or a dollop of ice cream on the side.

She did admit to being particularly fussy, since she has been spoiled.  She gets a regular supply of home baked treats from me. So it really just comes down to personal taste.  For me it looked great, much better than a factory made cake pretending to be homemade.

Along with my soya milk latte I tucked an individual 2 pack of Lazy Days - Chocolate Gingers.  The Cookie is half covered with dairy free chocolate, so doesn't take over the taste of ginger.  The only problem I had was with the latte, I knew when the soya milk started splitting that something was wrong.

When I pointed out the problem, they offered to open a new carton of soya milk and make me an other. So  I was pretty impressed with the customer service and my second latte tasted good.

The Cafe had a laid back holiday vibe, that I normally get when I'm abroad.  We both loved the relaxed atmosphere.  Being women we couldn't leave before buying something from the shop.  I treated myself to some Lazy Day Foods - Chocolate Tiffin, while mum bought some Aberdour Oatcakes.

Forgive the pun, but they get major Brownie points for being fair trade and supplying local Scottish produce.

We definitely plan to make a return visit, hoping to taste something from the lunch menu xx

If you know of any other Scottish Dairy free Cafe's or restaurants please let me know xxx
