IBS Travel journal - Airport food

Beach at Costa Teguise

I went from drinking peppermint tea at a beach side cafe on Thursday morning, only to travel back to the Scottish cold weather.   On the positive side, we were just glad there was no snow!!!

Iv survived a week without a computer or Internet access, keeping only a travel journal so I could note down useful information for other food intolerant holiday makers.  Whether for yourself, family member or friend.

First Blog - Airport Food.

The first stage of any holiday is coping with Airport food.  You need to arrive early to check in for your flight or like us the night before, so I spent a lot of pre-holiday planning on finding places I could eat.

We travelled from Glasgow airport so I checked out the Places to eat on the Airport website.

I'm pretty limited in what I can eat.  Dairy free, yeast free, meat free, low sugar and low fat.

Wetherspoon' s  - The Sandpiper

-Before airport Security - Opening hours 4 am till last flight

After booking in to our airport hotel for the night we headed over to the terminal to eat at The Sandpiper a Wetherspoon pub. I tend not to eat at the hotel's I stay at as i find the food overpriced and boring.

Was originally impressed with there website Tool - Menu builder, which lets you add your own specialist diet to find items you can eat.  In theory great, then I found out that the airport restaurant didn't have the same menu or listed items that you could only order on certain days of the week.

First were at a Scottish airport so guess what, they run out of Salmon........ The next item I tried to order was also sold out.  In the end I ordered the Freedom Salad.  Giant cous cous, chickpeas, soya beans, lambs lettuce, fresh mint leaf's and pomegranate.  Served with a balsamic dressing.

- Tasted great, it was a lovely light meal.  If you can still eat meat, poultry or salmon ( as long as they haven't run out!!!) you can add your choice to your order.  Price under £10.  Well worth it.

Frankie & Benny's

- After Security.  Opening hours 6 am - 8pm

Again they have a slightly different menu for there Airport Restaurants.  You can find out more info at Eat drink and Fly.  I ordered the Vegetarian fried breakfast. I forgot to ask if the slice of French Toast was dairy free so swapped it with my mum for her Potato scone.  The breakie includes, baked beans, fried peppers, mushrooms and a choice of fried or scrambled egg.  Along with a slice of French toast.

A bit pricey at £7.95 for the quantity of food your given.  Was OK but I'd rather have had my normal porridge.

Starbucks

- Have 2 locations, one before and one after security.  Opening hours 5 am - 8pm

Was a bit conflicted with the ethics of going to this one, due to the on-going debate on how much tax corporations should pay.  At the end of the day, Starbucks is one of the few places I can safely go to get a drink,  and now I can have breakie.  You now have a choice of soya milk for your Starbucks porridge.  I had mine with the very berry compote.  Or you also have the option of dried fruit.  (The Maple and honey Granola topping isn't dairy free) You can find more info at Starbucks nutrition for menu items you can eat or drink.

Porridge and Classic hot chocolate both with soya milk for under £5.00.  Tasted great, basic porridge that you can pimp to your own taste.

Travel tips

- Plan ahead, check out the food on offer at your departure Airport.  You should be able to find the info on their website.

- Take a back up emergency snack's to eat.  Best not to assume your going to find something.

- Take a pack lunch for the flight.  Airline food is very limited, costly and usually doesn't taste that great.  In Britain you can take solid food stuffs through security. Check the airlines website for restrictions.  There are always shops after security that you can also buy food  for your flight. (The ones before security usually cost less though)

For me my holiday starts at the Airport, so I like to make the experience as stress free as possible and enjoy myself xxx
