Scottish Take away classics -

Image
You must be  inebriated, before you can try them DEEP FRIED PIZZA Scotland has a colder climate than the rest of the UK, especially in the North where I was born.  So historically we would eat a lot of carbs because they were also cheap.  Being able to walk into a supermarket and have an endless range of food, is a pretty new phenomenon.   Which is why favourite traditional Scot's meals are - mince and tatties - stovies - porridge - Scotch broth soup.  (must be thick enough to stand a spoon in it) - Oatcakes  - tattie scones For most of the population meat was a luxury and wasn't eaten often.  Stovies was created as a way of bulking out the left overs. So it's not too hard to understand that when it comes to our modern day take away food it tends to be heavy on the carbs. Deep fried Pizza  - from serious eats.  Seems our Scottish classic is now being served in the US. Traditionally in Scotland, the...

Haggis - Not just for Burns night

Image
Haggis  Haggis is referred to as Scotland's national dish, however most records show that it was popular all over Britain.  I always see it as a thrifty food, that used up parts of the animal that the wealthy wouldn't eat.   Traditional haggis was made from the sheep's pluck, heart, liver and lungs. Which are minced down, then mixed with oatmeal and spices.  Every haggis maker have their own secret spice recipe, that's locked away. Most Scots only eat it with neep's and tatties once a year on Burns night.  Were more likely to buy it ready to eat.  For non meat eaters like myself, vegetarian haggis is readily available.   Haggis shepherds pie Perfect recipe for using up leftover haggis.  Use Vegetarian haggis, if you don't like the sound of normal haggis ingredients.   Haggis Bridie recipe   Most Bakers shops in Scotland will have some version of a haggis pie.  Perfect for eating on the go. Foods that SHOULD be dairy free

Image
I used to love making all my own food from scratch, however since being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia I can't do this anymore.  The major problem is my hands.  Every so often the muscles twitch in my legs and hands, and I really do not want to be holding a knife when that happens. So Iv been browsing the Supermarket aisles for my favourite foods. I've learnt the hard way when you have a food intolerance that It's best to always check the ingredients.  Much to my dismay foods that should not contain dairy seem to have it added.   Authentic Mexican Guacamole does not contain cream.  However more than one supermarket is guilty of this mistake.   Guacamole Asda Guacamole Contains Double cream Tesco Guacamole Contains Single Cream Morrisons Mexican style Guacamole Contains Double Cream Check out this site to make your own -  Classic Mexican Guacamole Recipe Hellmanns Classic Coleslaw recipe ...

Vegetable chips or French Fries......

Image
Sweet Potato Chips I'm from the UK, so too me Chips and French fries are the same things.  Only difference is that French fries are thin cut, while chips are thicker.  Either way they both taste great.  There also one of my biggest temptations. I love traditional fish and chips but they give me horrible heart burn. The oil is also not too great for my IBS.  Rather than cut them out of my diet totally, I switched to baking chips at home.   Which was okay for a while, but some of them are still half cooked in oil before there packaged.  So I started to make my own. There cheaper, simple to make and take very little cooking expertise. They also don't need to just be make from Potatoe's, any root vegetable will do.  Potatoe, sweet potatoe, parsnip, carrots, turnip Buying pre-made fresh or frozen food is almost a habit now,  I know it was for me.     You also buy into the adverts messages,...
