Waste not, Want not - Spring Onions

Image
SPRING ONIONS     Spring onions are a great salad vegetable that's really versatile to use.  Either on top of salads or sprinkled over cooked dishes.  The only problem is they have a really short shelf life.  They go limp after a few days of buying them.   I found this great tip on the Internet a while ago. Iv blogged about it before, however it deserves to be added to my Waste not Want not list.         Put your spring onion in water,  just like you would cut flowers.     1. Buy Spring Onions that still have some root attached.   2.  Place your spring onions into a suitable container and fill with enough water to cover the a few inches.   3 . Keep in the bottle drawer of your fridge or on your window sill.   It's that simple, the supply of water keeps the spring onions fresh for longer and can lead to new growth.     The longer they last, so your less likely to need to throw them out.      This has got to be one of the easiest Was

Waste Not Want Not - Best before and Use by dates

BEST BEFORE DATES & USE BY DATES   I really wanted an egg salad wrap when I got home from work last night. When I went to get the egg box from the fridge, I noticed the Best before date was for 2 days earlier.  Not the best planning for my aim of reducing food waste.      First thing I did was check to see if they were still good to eat.  I filled a jug full of cold water, then placed the egg in.      Sinks:   If the Egg sinks and lays on the bottom of the just its still okay to eat   Half & Half:   If one end of the egg tilts slightly upwards, it's not at its peak for taste.  However its still safe to eat if cook thoroughly.    Floats:   If the egg floats, or eggs up pointing totally vertically upwards.  Not Safe to eat. NHS - Advise   Eggs can be eaten after their "best before" date as long as they are cooked thoroughly until both yolk and white are solid, or if they are used in dishes where they will be fully cooke

Waste not, want not       Buy one, get one free......   www.channel4.com/4food   We all get taken in by Buy one, get one free bargains at the Supermarket.   Packaged foods are usually okay as they have a longer shelf life, however fresh food can cause problems. Before you buy.........   1. Check the best before date - Will you have enough time to eat it.  Can it be frozen?   2. Shop with a friend - My mum and I often shop for vegetables together and split the produce. That way we save money and reduce food waste.   3. Do you really need it? - This is a big one for me, I can get excited when I find a new product that I can eat. Especially when there is so much food that I can't....... It's easy to get carried away.    4. Make your own ready meals On my days off from work I like to make my own ready meals, so multi buys of fruit and vegetables are great value for money. I make a large quantity of food, eat a portion for dinner
